Preparing a match in the electronic match protocol

Preparing a match in the electronic match protocol

What the secretariat does before the whistle: opening the match protocol, choosing each team's players and shirt numbers, the leaders on the bench, shirt colours, match officials, periods and match length — and who is allowed to open the protocol at all.

Looking for something else? Editing a match and registering results Hiding matches, schedules and results from the public Appointing referees across a series Sport-specific protocols and event types

The electronic match protocol (EMP) is Profixio's digital score sheet. Before anyone can report goals, cards, timeouts or substitutions, the match has to be set up: both squads with shirt numbers, the leaders on the bench, the shirt colours, the match officials, and how many periods the match has and how long they are.

Setting the protocol up is a single action per match. The person who completes the setup and goes on to the match becomes the match's secretary. From that moment the protocol is locked to them until the secretary is removed from the match or another user takes over as secretary.

There are two different pre-match screens, and which one you get depends on the federation and sport:

  • Match Protocol Setup — the full screen this page describes, with players, leaders, colours and officials. It is used where the federation has switched the match protocol on for that sport.
  • A short Match Settings screen with only the number of periods, the period length and the extra-time length. This is what you get where the full protocol is off; you go straight from there into reporting events.

Setting up the protocol does not start the clock and does not publish anything. It only prepares the match. Everything that happens after the first whistle — events, timer, score — belongs to live reporting, and signing the finished protocol is a separate step again.

A match gets a protocol only when all of this is true:

  1. The federation has switched the protocol on for that sport. This is a central setting per federation and sport; ask your federation or district administrator if it needs changing. When it is off, there is no setup screen at all, and the match never appears in the protocol list.
  2. For league and series matches: the division uses the match protocol. Each division has its own switch for whether it uses the match protocol. Matches in a division without it are left out of the protocol list, and trying to open one is refused with "The tournament (ranking avdeling) does not use protocol".
  3. Both teams are real, registered teams. A match slot that is still a placeholder — a free-text team typed into the scheduling screen, or a bracket slot the draw has not filled yet — has no team behind it and therefore no squad to pick from. Opening the protocol is refused with "The match does not have a home team" or "The match does not have a away team".
  4. The match has no result yet. Once a result has been registered by hand, a new protocol cannot be started on that match.

Training matches are a special case: on a training match anyone signed in may open the protocol, and the setup screen lets you type the two team names directly.

You can practise registering events in a public training tournament: training tournament (basketball). Use the password 1234.

Event types:

No event types are defined.

  • Reporting the match itself — goals, cards, timeouts, substitutions, the clock and the score. See live reporting in the match protocol.
  • Signing and closing the protocol, spectator counts, comments and reopening a signed protocol. See signing the match protocol.
  • Which events exist in your sport, what a card or an expulsion does, and the sport-specific score sheets and PDFs. See sport-specific protocols and event types.
  • Building the team's squad for the season or the tournament. The protocol picks from a squad that already exists; putting people in that squad is team roster work.
  • Licences and playing rights — whether a player is allowed to play at all.
  • Appointing referees to matches — the protocol only reads the appointment.
  • Whether the match, its result or its line-up is visible to the public.
