Ranking points and seeding lists

Ranking points and seeding lists

How a federation's ranking points are earned, calculated and shown per player and team, how ranking classes, categories and point scales decide what a result is worth, and how a ranking is used to admit and seed teams in a tournament.

A ranking in Profixio is a federation's own point list for individual players. It is not something a single tournament organiser sets up: the federation decides that a ranking exists, which classes it covers, how many points a result is worth, and which tournaments count.

Three things follow from that:

  • Points belong to a person, not a team. A team's points are the sum of the points of the players registered on it.
  • Points are earned across tournaments, over a period of time, and they are recalculated — a player's total today is not a fixed number that was stored once.
  • Points are used for two practical things: a public ranking list, and deciding the order of teams when a competition is seeded or when a class is full.

Profixio contains two quite different ranking systems, because two federations wanted two different things:

System How points come in Used by
Placement-based You finish in a position in a class in a tournament that counts for the ranking. The position and the size of the field are converted into points using a point scale. Beach volleyball
Match-based Every single match you play moves points between you and your opponent. Totals are recalculated in periodic runs. Table tennis

If your federation is not on the list in the next section, tournaments in your sport have no ranking, no points columns and no ranking-based seeding — and nothing on this page applies to you.

Ranking is set up per federation and sport. These are the ones with a working ranking in Profixio:

Federation and sport Ranking system Public list Used for entry and seeding
Swedish Volleyball Federation — beach Placement-based, organised in competition periods Yes, open to everyone Yes
Norwegian Volleyball Federation — beach Placement-based, rolling 12 months Yes, open to everyone Yes
Swedish Table Tennis Association Match-based, recalculated in runs Yes, open to everyone No — the table tennis ranking is not used to seed tournaments in Profixio
Norwegian Badminton Association Placement-based, results loaded from files Yes Historical only

The badminton ranking pages still exist and still work, but no new tournaments have been registered for that ranking in many years, so treat it as historical.

An older indoor volleyball ("Sverigeserien") ranking list also exists for the Swedish Volleyball Federation. It is reachable but has not been changed for years.

If your federation is not in the table, there are no ranking points in your tournament, and the settings described below are not shown to you.

In a tournament that counts for the ranking, points are shown on the ordinary public pages — no login is needed.

On the list of teams

Each team has a small points button showing the team's total and, after it, each player's points separated by a slash. Clicking it opens a window headed Entry points with, for every player on the team:

  • the player's point sum,
  • a table of the player's results, with the competition period or date, a Description of the tournament, the Points, the Cat. category (class) the result came from, and the Place when the results have placings; results that do not count towards the sum are greyed out,
  • a line at the bottom saying which category the calculation is for and the date points are counted up to ("Points until …").

Results earned in another class are highlighted, so you can see when a total is made up of points from a different class.

If you sort the team list by Points, each team also gets a provisional position number within its class. That number is a preview of the order the points produce — it is not necessarily the seeding number used in the finished match programme.

On the list of registrations (Swedish beach volleyball)

The registration overview has sortable Entry Points and Ranking Points columns. Which of the two is filled in depends on the class: the classes that use entry points show entry points, the others show the plain ranking points.

An organiser can hide the registration list entirely, in which case only tournament administrators can open it.

Each federation with a ranking has a public list. It is open to everyone; you do not need an account.

Beach volleyball

In the tournament search, choose the country and beach volleyball and click Beach volleyball ranking to open the Swedish or Norwegian federation's list. Choose a class and a competition period. The table shows position, name, club and points, with how far each player has moved since the previous competition period, and for the mixed class an extra column, Own + other classes, splitting the total into points from the player's own class and points from other classes. The Norwegian list shows ranking points without a club column, adds each player's Entrypoints, and shows the movement since a week earlier. Click a player's name to see the individual results behind the total. In Sweden, players without a licence are listed last, without a position.

Table tennis

Choose men's or women's list first. The table shows position, previous position, name, year of birth, club, points and the change since the previous run. The list is paged in blocks of 500 positions, with a separate page for inactive players. Clicking a name opens the player's match history with the points won and lost per match. You can choose an earlier run and filter by district, club, para class and age. When the federation's page has a Ranking tab, it opens this list.

Because the table tennis list is produced by a run, it does not change between runs no matter how many matches have been played.

The word "ranking" is used for a second, unrelated thing in Profixio: the criteria that decide the order of teams in a standings table (points per win, then goal difference, then internal matches, and so on).

That has nothing to do with ranking points. It is chosen per category in the category settings, where Rang type selects which table calculation to use and a second setting selects how the table is displayed. Each organisation and sport also has a default. On a published table, Table explanation shows the criteria the teams were ranked on, and when three or more teams are level you can open the calculation between them.

Tables are hidden by default for the youngest age groups, but an administrator always sees them once a result has been registered.

All of that is described on the league standings and tables page.

Work down this list before reporting a problem.

No points at all in the tournament

  1. Is the tournament registered as counting for the ranking? If not, no points are shown anywhere, and the API returns nothing.
  2. Does the federation actually have a ranking? Only beach volleyball, table tennis and (historically) badminton do.

The order looks wrong

  1. Check the class's entry method. With time-based entry the order follows registration time even though the points are displayed.
  2. Points are counted up to the class's registration deadline — or the tournament start date if the class has none. A result achieved after that date is genuinely not counted.
  3. Remember which tie-break applies: in Norway the best player's total ranking points over the last 365 days decides; elsewhere it is the best player's entry points. Nothing decides the order beyond that, so two genuinely identical teams can appear in either order.

A player's total is lower than expected

  1. Only the best five results count, from a limited window. Older or weaker results are not added on top.
  2. Points inherited from a senior class only reach an age class if the ranking class is in the right group.
  3. Points are stored per person. If the player exists twice in the person register, results registered on one record will never show on the other. Ask support to check for a duplicate and merge the two.

A change does not show

  1. Calculated points are reused for up to an hour. Wait, or ask support to clear it.
  2. In table tennis, nothing changes until a new run has been made. Check the date of the latest run.
  • Standings tables and their tie-break criteria — the "ranking criteria" of a table are a different feature; see league standings and tables.
  • Creating and editing the classes of a tournament, groups, playoff format and weight classes — see classes and competition format.
  • Generating the match programme, distributing teams into groups and play keys — see match generation and scheduling.
  • A player's goals, cards and public profile — see player statistics and profiles.
  • Getting a webservice account and the rest of the API — see integrations, API and webservices.
  • Licences and playing rights, which decide whether a player may take part at all, not how many points they have.
