News from federations and districts
How federations and districts publish news on their pages in the Profixio app and where readers find it: writing an article, choosing the pages it is shown on, publishing, scheduling and featuring, news categories, changing several articles at once, and importing news from RSS feeds.
Federations and districts publish news articles on their pages in the Profixio app. Each article belongs to a federation or a district and is shown on the pages its author chooses: front pages and the pages of chosen competitions.
Where readers find news:
- Home on a federation or district page shows up to three articles at the top, with a link to the full list.
- News in the tab bar of a federation, district or competition page opens that page's news list. The tab is there when the page has published news.
- A competition page also shows its latest articles on its front tab.
- The news list has a search field and filters for year, month, news category, competition and district. A filter is shown when there is something to choose in it.
An article can carry a main image with the photographer's name, embedded tables and match lists, and a Documents list at the bottom that anyone reading the article can open. Feed readers can follow a page's news through the RSS feed the news list announces.
This is separate from the news on a cup's own tournament website, described in The tournament website: front page, pages, news and sponsors.
For other roles
Federation and district administrators write news under Communication → News in the admin menu. People the federation has given News writer access (see Federations, districts, sports and other base data) write the federation's news there too.
You write as the federation or district of the role you are logged in as, shown as Owner on the article. Federation articles and district articles are kept apart: you see and edit only the articles of the federation or district you are logged in as.
- Open Articles and click Create news article.
- Choose a News category, fill in Headline and, if you like, Lead, a short introduction shown under the headline and in the news lists.
- Add a Main image if you have one. Once an image is added, Photo credit appears; what you write there is shown with the image on the article.
- Write the Body. Besides text, headings, lists, links, images and tables, you can insert a Standings table, a Match list, or chosen Matches. A Standings table or Match list shows the latest data; turn on Freeze a snapshot to keep the data as it was the first time the article is shown, also in Preview. Refresh widgets on the article captures the latest data again.
- Under Documents, use Add document to attach PDF, Word, Excel or image files, each with a Display name. Documents are public: anyone who can see the article can open and share them.
- Tick Hide author name to credit only the organisation on the article.
Where the article appears is set under Shown on, and the article stays a draft until you publish it.
Shown on decides which pages show the article. A new article starts with your own front page ticked.
A federation can tick Federation front page, The federation's own competitions, All district front pages and All competitions, including the districts, as well as each district's front page and all competitions in a single district. A district can tick District front page and The district's competitions.
For a narrower audience, pick Competition categories, Single competitions or Competition levels. Competition choices belong to the season you are working in; when that is not the active season, a warning says so, and the article does not appear on the active season's competition pages. A rule for all competitions also covers competitions added later in the season, and choices it already covers are greyed out.
The summary at the bottom of Shown on counts and lists the pages the article reaches right now. An article must be shown on at least one page before you can publish it.
A new article is a Draft until you publish it. Preview opens a draft, or a published article's unpublished changes, on the public page.
- Publish article makes the article public. You can also set Status to Published and save.
- Published at schedules the article: set a future time and it appears automatically at that time.
- Unpublish at hides it automatically after the time you set.
- Featured pins the article to the top of your own front page, when the article is shown there, and Featured until ends the pin at the time you set.
- Move to draft takes a published article off the pages again.
Published at, Unpublish at, Featured and Featured until are under More options. The two time fields appear once Status is set to Published.
Editing a published article does not change what visitors see straight away. Your saved changes wait, and the article list shows Unpublished changes under its status. Click Publish changes to replace the live version, or Discard changes to drop them. Version history lists earlier versions of the article that you can restore.
Duplicate copies an article into a new draft, and Duplicate last on the article list copies the most recently created article of the federation or district you are logged in as. A copy keeps the front pages and the rules for all competitions under Shown on; single competitions, competition categories and levels are picked again.
Every article has a news category, which readers see on the article and can filter the news list by. News categories on the article list shows the categories you can use. A federation starts with a set of default categories, and its districts use the federation's categories and can add their own.
- New category adds a category with a Name and a Sort order.
- Deleting a category that is in use asks which category to move its articles to. The federation always keeps at least one category.
To change several articles at once, tick them in the article list and choose Publish, Unpublish, Change category, Mark as featured or Remove featured. Afterwards a message says how many articles were updated and how many were skipped, for example articles that cannot be published yet.
If the federation or district already publishes news on its own website, you can import it under Feeds in News.
- Open Feeds and create a feed.
- Enter the Feed URL, the RSS or Atom address from the website, and a Label, shown as the source on imported articles.
- Choose the Import mode. Full article imports the whole text when the feed contains it; Teaser with link to source shows the summary with a link to the original.
- Pick where the articles are shown under Shown on, at least one page, and optionally a News category.
- Turn on Publish automatically to publish imported articles at once, or leave it off to have them wait as drafts.
Feeds are imported automatically every hour; turn off Enabled to pause a feed. Import now fetches straight away, and Test feed checks that the address works without importing anything. The first import fetches the 20 newest articles; later imports fetch at most 50 new ones each time. Last run shows the result of the latest import.
The body of an imported article comes from the source and cannot be edited in Profixio. If you change Shown on for a feed later, Apply "Shown on" to imported articles adds the feed's pages to the articles it has already imported. Only import content you have the right to publish.
